Municipal councillors in Antigonish Co. have approved the development agreement for a new affordable housing project.
They unanimously passed the motion following a public hearing at November’s regular council meeting Tuesday night.
Councillors also formally approved the sale of a parcel of land on Appleseed Dr. for $1.
After the meeting, Owen McCarron, the warden of the municipality, said it brings the project one step closer to reality.
“This here was a formality, really,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that it was done in a timely fashion so that construction is not impeded.”
Antigonish Affordable Housing Society members are planning a four-building, 12-unit development across from Antigonish Education Centre and Saint Andrew Junior School; one, two and three-bedroom apartments will be available, with four barrier-free units for tenants with mobility issues.
McCarron said it’s an easy project to support.
“It continues to build on the (Antigonish) Affordable Housing Society’s good work in our community,” he said. “You look at the previous build (14 affordable housing units on Hope Lane) and hear nothing but good stories.”
McCarron said municipal officials donated the land- valued at roughly $65,000- for the project, which is expected to cost $3 million.
Town and county officials each contributed $100,000 through five years.
