An additional charge after bomb threat toward U.S. Consulate in Halifax

The suspect in connection to the bomb threat in downtown Halifax last week is now facing an additional charge.

RCMP say Ali Assakereh, 54, is now facing an offence for a threat against an internationally protected person. It’s in addition to uttering threats and public mischief.

The investigation began August 9 when police say the threat came in against the U.S. Consulate in Purdy’s Wharf.

The next morning, police discovered a propane tank and several containers of flammable liquid inside his vehicle.

A large area of downtown Halifax was evacuated while police investigated.

The bail hearing for Assakereh was delayed more than once and is now scheduled for August 19.

Assakereh has been in custody and is scheduled to appear in court for the new charge, Wednesday morning.
