The Town and County of Antigonish Emergency Management Team are working to coordinate clean up efforts from the aftermath of the hurricane.
The clean ups will focus on clearing the roads as many are still impassable. Since the power is out, drivers are asked to exercise caution at four way stops and treat traffic lights like four way stops. “All in all we are doing okay, we just ask people to be patient.” says Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher.
The Town and county are also dealing with a fuel shortage as gas stations are unable to operate and people that have extra fuel are requested to share with their neighbours.
Comfort stations have been set up for people that need to charge their electronics and to have a hot beverage:
Beech Hill Fire Hall 8AM -4PM
Arisaig Parish Hall 11AM- 3PM
Lochaber Centre 10AM-2PM
Mini Trail Community Centre 1PM-4PM
North Shore Fire Hall 12PM-5PM
Pomquet Fire Hall 2PM until 6PM
St Andrews Community Centre 11AM to 6PM
St Josephs Community Hall will offer hot food until 2PM and a warming centre from 4PM until 7PM
The Town Hall Recreation Office will also be open as a charging station from 1PM until 5PM
It is still not known when electricity will be restored to community members that lost their power. Restoration priority will be given to gas stations and food services and St Martha’s Regional Hospital. Power to the Braemore and Cloverville areas will take longer to restore as more repair work is needed.
The Town of Antigonish also announced that due to the significant rainfall their mandatory water conservation order has been lifted effective today.
