Antigonish Co. keeps courthouse

Antigonish Co. will keep its courthouse.

At a special council meeting last night, the Antigonish Municipal Council approved changes to its lease agreement with the province; increasing rent and adding money for capital maintenance projects.

Deputy Clerk Beth Schumacher tells The Hawk the extra money will allow them to make much needed repairs.

“It provides the municipality with the funds that we need in order to be able to make repairs to the building,” she says. “Which includes things like the exterior trim and siding, as well as upgrades to the heating and cooling system.”

Schumacher says they’re glad to be able to keep the building.

The building was built in 1855 so it’s doing very well to still be standing over 160 years later,” she says. “And we’re hoping that the repairs we make mean that it’s here for a number of years to come.”
