A mental health assessment indicates an Antigonish man charged with two counts of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to stab his wife and three-year-old daughter was not criminally responsible.
RCMP say officers were called to a home on Brookland St. in July.
They say the woman called 911 from a neighbour’s home; the child was with her, and the man was still inside the other home.
Police say the woman and child were taken to hospital by paramedics.
They say officers found the man outside the home shortly after; he was arrested without incident.
Shajev Thomas, 41, was sent for a 30-day mental health assessment the day after his arrest; he appeared in Antigonish Provincial Court by video link from the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon.
Both the Crown and defense lawyers said they accept the results of the assessment, which indicate Thomas was not criminally responsible due to mental disorder.
A judge will rule on the merits of the assessment following a hearing in Antigonish Dec. 10; Thomas will remain at the Dartmouth facility until then.
