Budget work underway in Antigonish Co.

The warden of Antigonish Co. says their fiscal outlook is positive.

Owen McCarron says staff members have started prep work on their 2021-22 budget.

The municipality’s fiscal year closes at the end of the month.

After March’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, McCarron said their numbers are promising.

“We feel we’re going to come in on budget, or maybe have a slight surplus,” he said. “It’s been a little easier winter for us, so that’s a good thing.”

The municipality’s fiscal year ends March 31.

McCarron said it’s too early to say what could happen to tax rates.

“There’s been a bit of an increase in assessments, so we need to just look at all the pieces of our operation, and determine if we can continue maintaining the tax rate that we have,” he said. “It’s been 12 years, and we haven’t had an increase in taxes in the County of Antigonish.”

McCarron said they hope to strike their tax rate and budget by May.
