Canada has begun imposing retaliatory tariffs of 15, 25, and 50 per cent on a range of U.S. products, matching recent American trade measures against Canadian goods.
The counter-tariffs took effect just after midnight on Tuesday, September 8, and apply to $27.6 billion worth of imports from the U.S.
The federal government says the move is a dollar-for-dollar response to the U.S. decision to impose 50 per cent tariffs on certain Canadian goods last month.
Products affected by the new Canadian tariffs include steel, dairy products, agricultural goods, electronics, and paper products.
Ottawa says the measures apply only to goods that originate in the United States.
The federal government says the tariffs are intended to respond directly to U.S. trade measures announced in August while protecting Canadian interests.
