Candidate says he answered calls to run

A mayoral candidate in the Town of Mulgrave says he’s answering calls to run from residents.

Ron Chisholm has served on town council since 2013.

Chisholm tells The Hawk he’s done a lot of good work in that time, and he doesn’t want the town to amalgamate.

“If we’re running as a town, we have the say of what happens in our town- that’s my biggest thing, if we go to Guysborough, what kind of say are we going to have? We don’t know,” he says. “My feeling is we’re going to run the town as long as we can run (it).”

Chisholm says his main goal is to develop infrastructure and attract business to improve the town’s tax base.

He says there might be some new, good ideas around the council table.

“We’ve got two new councillors- just young people- and they’ll have a different outlook on everything, and maybe some new ideas,” he says. “We’ll see if we can run with that.”

Chisholm says he’s open to anything that will protect the town from potential amalgamation.

He says his other priorities include a long-term plan for the former Mulgrave Memorial Education Centre and a solution for the dangerous Aulds Cove intersection.

Voters will choose between Chisholm and Lorne MacDonald, a former town mayor, in the Oct. 17 municipal elections.
