Canso councillor says hospital closure has to be dealt with

A councillor in the Municipality of the District of Guysbrough says the overnight closure of Eastern Memorial Hospital is heartbreaking.

Officials with the Nova Scotia Health Authority announced the Canso hospital will be closed at night due to a lack of nursing staff Thursday; the first closure took place Sunday.

Fin Armsworthy, the municipal councillor for the Canso area, tells The Hawk it’s a big loss for residents.

“It’s a lifeline in the community,” he says. “Being the lifeline to to the community means everything to the community.”

The new hours for the hospital are 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Armsworthy says this issue isn’t just in Canso- it’s right across the province.

“There should be another option to be able to do that,” he says. “I know there’s problems all over the place, but that problem should be fixed.”

Municipal councillors held an emergency meeting Friday afternoon; they unanimously voted to write a letter to their counterparts at various levels of government and the CEO of the health authority.

They also voted to provide financial incentives to help attract medical professionals to the area.
