Business, community leader passes away

A well-known community volunteer and business leader has died.

Irene MacLeod died of cancer at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish Thursday; she was 60.

MacLeod built the MacLeod Group, a nursing home operation with 600 residents and 1,000 employees as well as commercial properties, with her husband Brian.

She was also active in politics, working as a campaign manager at the provincial and federal levels; municipally, she ran for mayor of the Town of Antigonish in 2016.

MacLeod volunteered with numerous community organizations, including the Antigonish Highland Society, Festival Antigonish, the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre, L’Arche Antigonish, the Strait Area Early Childhood Intervention Society, and St. James United Church.

Her private family funeral is Tuesday.
