Town officials in Port Hawkesbury are looking at the possibility of installing security cameras in some green spaces after a rash of vandalism in town.
The nefarious acts have been an ongoing issue, Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said.
Flowers have been ripped out of flower beds, the pipe system in the Grant’s Pond fountain damaged and some trees on Reeves street snapped in half.
“I don’t understand why anybody would want to be malicious about something that just adds to the beauty of our town,” Chisholm-Beaton said.
Council discussed the idea at Tuesday night’s committee of the whole meeting.
“Investing in some security cameras, we hope, will first and foremost act as insurance and if it does occur in the future, we want to be able to have the footage,” Chisholm-Beaton said.
If they capture video of someone damaging town property, she says, they’ll give the tape to the RCMP.
Councillors supported the idea and Chisholm-Beaton expects it will be formally approved at the next regular council meeting.
