Councillor disappointed with increase in tax rates

A councillor in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says he’s very disappointed in the municipality’s 2018-19 budget.

The budget passed by a vote of 6-2 at Wednesday’s council meeting; Fin Armsworthy and Janet Peitzsche were the only nay votes.

After the meeting, Armsworthy said a five-cent tax rate increase is a lot for his constituents in the Canso area and they’re disappointed.

“We’ve been waiting for a break tax-wise for five years,” he said. “There’s been three different studies done and everytime we go back to the table, it’s never there- this is just another five cents on and people are just feeling it; they don’t know which way to turn anymore.”

Municipal officials say rates are higher in the Canso area because assessments are low and residents pay close to $300 less in taxes per household than residents in Guysborough.
