Richmond Co. councillors will decide if candidates for mayor will appear on the ballot in time for the 2020 municipal elections.
They formally moved to start community consultation regarding moving from the current warden system to a Mayor-at-Large at June’s regular municipal council meeting Thursday night.
Councillors wanted to move on the change in time for the next election.
After the meeting, Brian Marchand, the warden of the municipality, said they haven’t decided how they’ll conduct community consultations yet.
“That’s a discussion for early fall- we need to have some decision by January to put the application in or make the change,” he said. “Is it a plebiscite, which can be expensive, is it through web poll, or is it through a mailout?”
Marchand said it’s their prerogative to make the change, but they don’t intend to move forward without a mandate from residents.
