Date set for Mulgrave’s animal bylaw plebiscite

The mayor of Mulgrave says town officials will be happy to put a long-standing debate to bed.

Councillors voted to hold a plebiscite on a proposed poultry and farm animals bylaw Aug. 21 during their regular meeting Monday night.

After, Ron Chisholm, the town’s mayor, told The Hawk the issue of backyard animals has been around for years, and it’s not going away on its own.

“We’re already starting to get a number of complaints about smell and animals running around other people’s property,” he said. “You’ve just got to have some respect for the other residents next to you.”

Chisholm said they’ve gone back and forth, and it’s time to let the town’s residents decide.

He said they’ll be happy to put the issue behind them once and for all.

“We’ve battled it for the last two or three years, and it’s gone nowhere,” he said. “Let the residents make the final decision, and let’s have it over with.”

Chisholm said they still have to determine how they’ll actually conduct the plebiscite.

He said it’s difficult to plan without knowing what public health restrictions may be in place at that time.
