Deryn Rizzi officially takes over as Halifax’s new fire chief

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency has officially welcomed its new chief, Deryn Rizzi, who has become the first woman to lead the department.

Rizzi stepped into the role on Monday and brings decades of experience in fire and emergency services to the position. She began her career in Ontario and advanced through the ranks, earning a reputation as a respected leader within the profession.

She is widely recognized for her transformative leadership, operational excellence and commitment to advancing public safety. Rizzi has also been a strong advocate for firefighter safety, wellbeing and professional development throughout her career.

In a statement, Rizzi said she is honoured to join Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, one of Canada’s oldest fire departments.

The department serves more than 500,000 residents across the Halifax Regional Municipality and responds to a wide range of emergency incidents, including fires, medical emergencies, technical rescues and hazardous materials calls.

Members of the Halifax Professional Firefighters Association have welcomed Rizzi’s arrival as she begins leading the department into a new chapter.
