Councillors in the Town of Port Hawkesbury have awarded a contract as part of the Destination Reeves St. project.
The tender is for construction of part of the active transportation lane from NSCC Strait Area Campus to Pitt St., as well as some streetscape work.
The contract, which is worth roughly $1.5 million, is broken up into two phases through two years.
After April’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said they awarded the contract to reps with Dexter Construction Friday.
“We put out the work order that we wanted achieved, and then we had three companies that put forward proposals for that work,” she said, “We went with Dexter, who was able to check off all the boxes in terms of work that we wanted to do within our budgeted allotment.”
Chisholm-Beaton said the tender process is extensive.
She said it doesn’t always necessarily come down to the lowest bid.
“We were also looking for quality as well- how they’re proposing to achieve the work that we’ve set out in our proposal.”
Chisholm-Beaton said design work is already well underway, and the major portion of the construction will take place in the spring and summer.
She said some of the work could end up spilling into the fall.
