Officials with the provincial government have taken another step toward twinning the 38-kilometre stretch of Hwy. 104 between Antigonish and Sutherlands River.
Reps with the Dexter Nova Alliance consortium have been formally awarded the contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new twinned section.
They outbid two other companies shortlisted for the $717.9 million project; they were selected as the preferred proponent in January.
Provincial officials say work is set to get underway in June, and finish no later than the end of 2023.
The project, which includes $90 million in federal funding, will feature 28 kilometres of new two-lane twinned highway, and 10 kilometres of new four-lane twinned highway; there will be two new interchanges and about 24 new bridges.
That section of Hwy. 104 has had numerous fatal crashes in recent years.
