DFO officials provide ghost gear funding

Federal officials have announced funding to remove ghost fishing gear.

They’re providing a total of $8.3 million to 26 recipients to clean up oceans of the gear.

Officials with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans say lost and abandoned fishing gear poses serious danger to marine animals such as whales and turtles, the coastal and marine environment, and global fishing stocks.

Reps with the Eastern Nova Scotia Marine Stewardship Society and the Cape Breton Fish Harvesters Association are two of the five funding recipients in our province.
