Driver in fatal Antigonish Co. crash pleads not guilty

A woman facing impaired driving-related charges in relation to an Antigonish Co. crash that left a boy dead has entered not guilty pleas.

Police say officers responded to the scene of the crash on South Side Harbour Rd. in Lower South River early one Sunday afternoon in July 2019.

They say three people were in the vehicle; one passenger, a three-year-old boy, died at the scene.

Tara Breukel, 33, was not in court when her case opened in Oct. 2019; at the time, her legal aid lawyer said Breukel was at a B.C. treatment facility, and she was still waiting for Crown evidence.

The Crown requested a publication ban in the case, and the judge granted it; that means we can’t tell you the victim’s name, or any information that could identify him.

Breukel pleaded not guilty during an election-and-plea hearing in Antigonish Provincial Court Wednesday; she’s scheduled to return to court for a three-day preliminary inquiry Sept. 29- Oct. 1.
