Events in Antigonish for International Women’s Week

International Women’s Week is taking place in Antigonish, and across the globe.

Women in Antigonish have marked the success of local and international women March 8 each year since the 1980s; International Women’s Day grew to become a week of women organizing, learning, honouring and celebrating in 2013.

Annie Chau, the project coordinator for Advancing Women’s Equality at the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre, tells The Hawk the 2019 theme was inspired by local university students.

“The theme is ‘Standing Together- Women Organizing for Justice’,” she says. “(It) was largely inspired by some of the students at StFX who have shown real solidarity with one another.”

Chau says events start Monday, and run until Saturday.

She says the week is recognized worldwide.

“It is a week that is long-standing, and (is) internationally recognized week and day for women’s equality.”

Chau says child care is available at some of the local events.
