Ever wanted to visit Sable Island? Here are your options.

It’s on my bucket list to visit the amazing Sable Island! It’s about 250 km off Halifax and is one of the most isolated and strange islands out there, with its own strange ecosystem. Plus, there’s the wild horses, shipwrecks, and beautiful beaches.

The island is protected and controlled by Parks Canada, and not just anyone can go there anytime. You need written permission to visit, and even then, you can’t just stay there. Most visits are day visits only. This is to protect the fragile area and keep the island as untouched as possible.

If you’re like me and would love to visit someday, here are your options along with the prices (IT’S EXPENSIVE)

Option 1: Helicopter Tour

One of the most popular ways to visit is by helicopter from the Halifax area.

A guided day trip will cost you around $3,495 CAD plus HST per person and includes return helicopter transportation, Parks Canada fees, and a guided visit on the island.

Option 2: Fixed-Wing Aircraft

Small aircraft flights are available through Parks Canada-licensed operators. Flights typically operate between June and October and take about 75 to 120 minutes each way.

These flights will cost you around $2000 per seat, for a day trip.

Option 3: Expedition Ship or Tour Boat

Some expedition cruises and specialty tour operators include Sable Island as part of their itineraries. Costs vary widely depending on the cruise and length of the voyage. Landing is weather dependent.

Option 4: Private Sailboat

If you have your own vessel, you can apply for permission to visit. Parks Canada requires advance approval before landing on the island. Costs depend on your boat and voyage expenses. It’s around $37 for a day pass but if you want a guided tour it will be around $300. There can also be more fees added on depending on circumstances. Find out more HERE
