Farrell becomes deputy mayor

Antigonish has a new deputy mayor.

Councillor Mary Farrell was nominated- and unopposed- for the role at November’s regular town council meeting Monday night.

After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of the town, said it’s a very important position.

“If there’s anything that I cannot attend, the deputy mayor will step in,” she said. “If I’m away for a few days, my responsibilities go to the deputy mayor.”

Farrell replaces Donnie MacInnis.

Boucher said she’ll bring a lot to the role.

“Deputy Mayor Farrell is someone that I go to to discuss things,” she said. “She’s very fair, open-minded, and always has the concern of the community in her mind when making decisions.”

Farrell, a first-term town councillor, was first elected in the 2016 municipal elections.

Her one-year term as deputy mayor leads up to the next municipal elections in 2020.
