Federal officials contribute $1,000,000 to We’koqma’q First Nation’s aquaculture operation

Members of the We’koqma’q First Nation are receiving $1,000,000 for their aquaculture operation.

Rodger Cuzner, Cape Breton-Canso Member of Parliament, made the announcement Friday.

Federal officials say 45 community members currently work as part of the operation, but the funding will create 10 new jobs.

They say the money will be used as part of dock upgrades, to buy cages and nets, as well as a work barge among other purchases.

Government officials say members of the band council are also contributing $750,000 toward the project.
