Former local MP says diplomatic role great opportunity

Cape Breton-Canso’s former MP says he’s not done serving the country yet.

Rodger Cuzner, who didn’t run in the last federal election in 2019, was appointed Consul General to Boston by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in October.

Cuzner tells The Hawk he spoke with representatives in the appointments branch of the Prime Minister’s Office as he was leaving office.

“I wasn’t ready to hang it up just quite yet, so I looked through the number of appointments that might fit my skill set and that might be of interest, and this one sort of popped out,” he says. “An opportunity to give back, I think that’s what this is, (and to) use some of the things that you’ve learned and some of the contacts you developed.”

Cuzner says he and his wife will move to Boston for the length of the four-year term.

He says it’s bittersweet.

“It’s a little tough leaving the Mira and leaving Cape Breton,” he says. “I think it’s going to be a tremendous life experience.”

Cuzner says he’ll be in charge of the Consulate General, providing government services to Canadian ex-pats throughout the New England states- anything they need, including voting in a Canadian election, as well as strengthening trade ties between our country and the New England region.

He says he’ll also work with officials in the Canadian Embassy to the United States in Washington, D.C. to implement any foreign policy directives from government officials.

Cuzner says he’s set to start in the new role in the first week of December.
