Former StFX football players charged with sexual assault committed to stand trial

Two former members of the X-Men football team charged following a sexual assault investigation at StFX have been committed to stand trial.

Jonah Williams, 20, of Halifax has been charged with three counts of sexual assault against two different women; Tyler Ball, 19, of Truro faces a single count of sexual assault.

They elected Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge-and-jury trials- Williams in relation to one of his alleged incidents- during an election-and-plea hearing in February; their preliminary inquiries, which determine if there’s enough evidence to send a case to trial, opened with two days in Antigonish Provincial Court in June.

Those hearings resumed Monday; both were committed to stand trial, and are expected to return to have a date set for that trial Oct. 2.

Williams has pleaded not guilty to his two other alleged incidents, and is scheduled to stand trial on those matters Dec. 10-11.

The pair played defensive back for StFX- Williams was in the team’s starting line-up, Ball was not.

Neither Williams nor Ball are still with the X-Men football program.

RCMP say an 18-year-old told them she was sexually assaulted on campus in November; that led a 19-year-old to come forward and report two separate cases of sexual assault on campus.
