Premier Tim Houston is calling out the president of the United States after he threatened to tariff Canada over wildfire smoke that is billowing south of the border.
In a video posted to his social media Monday evening, Houston said friends step up when you’re in trouble.
“They help. They don’t threaten you, they don’t laugh at you, they don’t stand by and watch things burn. They don’t tariff. They act,” said Houston.
On his truth social account, Donald Trump accused Canada of “willful negligence” over the raging wildfires in northern Ontario and threatened to tariff our country over the pollution.
Houston called Trump’s commentary ignorant and thanked Governor Maura Healey in Massachusetts for offering support.
He also thanked Newfoundland for sharing resources for the Mooseland Road wildfire here in Nova Scotia.
“Because that’s what friends do when you’re in trouble,” said Houston.
The Mooseland Road fire broke out July 15, evacuated more than 100 people for a few days, and is now being held at 1,447 hectares.
Houston acknowledged that the past week has been incredibly stressful for everyone worried about the wildfires.
“What they could mean for your home, your family and your community,” said Houston.
“But thanks for the amazing work of our first responders, the immediate danger has passed and families are now returning home safely.”
