Guysborough, Canso hospitals resume overnight ER service

Overnight emergency department coverage is returning to a pair of local hospitals- at least for now.

Officials with the Nova Scotia Health Authority say they’re restoring 24/7 ER coverage daily at Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso- starting Thursday- until July 27.

They say Guysborough Memorial Hospital‘s ER will operate 24/7 on intermittent days.

It will close- as previously announced- at 7 p.m. Thursday, re-open for the weekend, then close again Monday; it will then be open July 14, 16, 20, 22 and 24-26.

Emergency rooms at both hospitals will remain open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during this period.

NSHA officials say they know residents want their emergency departments open 24/7 every day, and they’re trying to provide the best level of service they can with the resources available.

They say they remain committed to developing a long-term plan for both communities.
