Local group getting food to seniors during COVID-19

A group in Guysborough Go. is delivering food to the region’s vulnerable seniors during COVID-19.

Al England, the chair of the board directors of the Mulgrave and Area Medical Centre, says the county has one of the oldest populations in the province.

England tells The Hawk 50 per cent of residents are over the age of 55.

“People are somewhat isolated, some people may have health issues, they may have difficultly preparing meals.”

England says the Community Food Connections program helps protect our most vulnerable neighbours.

He says it makes sure people who are at the most risk have access to good food.

“We’re getting good take-up on the program from all locations within the district,” he says. “We’re very pleased with the progress to date.”

He says about 100 people have signed up so far, but there’s still room for more, so he encourages anyone in need to apply.

  • Kelly MacMillan lives in Port Hawkesbury with her husband and son. She has been part of the team at 101.5 The Hawk for more than 25 years, sharing stories from around the region. You can join her weekdays from 10am until 2pm.
