Hearing into discount mill power rate underway

A Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board hearing into a proposed lower power rate for Port Hawkesbury Paper has started.

Officials with Nova Scotia Power are applying for a discount rate for the paper mill in Point Tupper; the hearing got underway Tuesday morning.

The four-year proposal would give NSP reps the right to order their mill counterparts to increase or reduce their daily power consumption throughout the year.

Mill reps have said they need the discount to lower their power bill and keep the operation viable; NSP officials say they can save other customers $10 million a year by controlling how much electricity the mill uses and when.

The hearing could last until Friday.
