Heavy trucks still won’t be able to come through Mulgrave.
At last November’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council approved a route for B-train trucks, transport trucks with two trailers, to come through the town, it included time of day restrictions and the use of a guide vehicle.
After December’s regular council meeting Monday night, Mayor Ron Chisholm said it was the second alternative route they proposed, the first was down through Monastery and up Hwy. 344 to the Strait of Canso Superport.
Chisholm told The Hawk they were concerned the first alternate route would hurt business at the port, but industry reps rejected the second alternate route as well.
“In the end, they changed their mind, they said they couldn’t get the trucks in through.”
Chisholm said an alternate route was required because the main street bridge in the town cannot hold the weight of the heavy trucks.
He said the second alternate route came through the town but required some turns the trucks were not capable of.
“The only way they could get back down, on the other side of the bridge, was to come down the post office hill,” he said. “Coming down the post office hill, the hairpin turn, with a b-train on, was just about impossible.”
Chisholm said that means all trucks coming to the Strait of Canso Superport must be light enough to cross the main street bridge.
He said that will be the case until the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal replaces the old bridge.
