Nova Scotian’s reminded to plan ahead as Emergency Preparedness Week begins

As extreme weather events like storms, localized flooding, and wildfires become more common, the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is reminding residents that preparation can make a real difference during emergencies.

With Emergency Preparedness Week underway (May 3-9), city officials are urging people to understand the risks they face and have a plan before something unexpected happens.

Residents are encouraged to think about pets, medications, and anyone in their household who may need extra assistance if services are disrupted.

Halifax is also reminding residents with mobility or medical challenges that additional support is available through the city’s Voluntary Vulnerable Persons Registry. The registry helps ensure first responders are aware of those who may require extra help during an emergency.

Local emergency teams will be on hand at the Joint Emergency Management (JEM) Jamboree on Saturday, May 9, offering residents a chance to learn about local risks, emergency preparedness and how volunteering can help strengthen community response when it matters most.
