UPDATE: Three killed in N.B. crash involving Island EMS ambulance

A man and two women from PEI are dead following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 16 between Port Elgin and the Confederation Bridge.

RCMP believe a westbound ambulance collided head-on with a transport truck at around 9:11 am on Tuesday near Melrose, New Brunswick.

The 56-year-old man from Warren Grove was behind the wheel of the ambulance, and a 77-year-old woman from Montague and a 23-year-old woman from Nine Mile Creek were passengers.

Island EMS posted condolences on social media early this afternoon, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic motor vehicle collision involving two of our paramedics and the patient in their care. At this time, the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Out of respect for those involved and their loved ones, we ask that our community honour those affected without speculation, but instead with compassion and patience as they navigate the difficult days ahead. We appreciate all of the outreach from the community. Our focus is on the families, friends, and colleagues of those who have been impacted by this.”

RCMP say the driver of the transport truck was taken to hospital with what were believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway reopened early Wednesday morning.

Both vehicles have been sent for a mechanical inspection.

Richibucto, Shediac, and Caledonia RCMP Detachments, as well as Straight Shores Fire Department, Ambulance New Brunswick, an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist, an RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System operator(drone), a member of the New Brunswick Coroner’s office, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Justice and Public Safety, and WorkSafe NB al assisted at the scene.
