Impact of storm still felt in Antigonish

Clean-up from the major winter storm continues in Antigonish.

During February’s regular council meeting Tuesday night, officials said 40 centimetres of snow fell in the town during the massive storm Feb. 7-8.

After the meeting, Jeff Lawrence, the town’s chief administrative officer, said it was a massive wallop, and they had to deal with other issues at the same time.

“It happened at a time where we had two or three water breaks,” he said. “There was some freezing rain in there, and we had some equipment issues.”

Lawrence said it took a big bite out of their winter maintenance budget.

He said town officials spent the equivalent of two months worth of that budget during the last two weeks of clean-up.

“Part of what we budget for is overtime,” he said. “When we have a storm like that, we’re operating 16 hours a day, basically close to seven days a week; your salting budget goes up.”

Lawrence said a mild start to the season has left them in relatively good shape for the rest of winter.

He said snow removal will continue at the town’s commercial areas through the rest of the week.
