Council for the Municipality of the County of Inverness heard, once again, about ongoing internet issues plaguing the region.
At December’s regular council meeting Thursday, a community group gave a presentation about the gaps in Bell’s fibre op map.
They asked council to aggressively pursue the federal Universal Broadband Fund, and further lobby Develop Nova Scotia for internet and cell infrastructure funding.
Afterward, Warden Laurie Cranton said staff are engaged on both fronts.
“We’ll leave nothing on the table, I can assure everybody of that,” he said. “At the same, there a lot of intricacies to those applications, especially the federal one.”
Cranton said he thought council was on the same page as the community group.
He said, these things take a lot of work to get moving.
“We have to make sure, if we’re going to put our energy into applying, that we have a clear understanding of the best direct route to that money.”
Cranton said staff would put in that work where it could do the most good.
The group also proposed looking at competitors, in particular the developing Elon Musk Starlink satellite Wi-Fi project, they also suggested the municipality buy its own cell and fibre op towers.
