Inverness Co. ramping up sidewalk clearing efforts

A local municipality has committed to redouble its sidewalk clearing efforts.

At January’s regular Municipality of the County of Inverness council meeting Thursday, councillors relayed complaints they received after the heavy snowfall at the beginning of the month.

They said snow was not cleared from sidewalks until the Monday after the weekend storm, which created dangerous conditions for people trying to use them.

Keith MacDonald, Chief Administration Officer for Inverness Co., said contractors handle snow clearing on municipal sidewalks, except for in Inverness because it is nearby to a Strathlorne public works facility, so staff will need to speak to them.

“That contractor was providing clearing services whenever there was a snowfall event, so that was on automatic,” he said. “I’m going to have to sit down with the infrastructure emergency service team, responsible for clearing, to make sure that weekend schedules are fully in place going forward.”

MacDonald said, regardless of who is responsible for which sidewalk, they will ensure weekend snow clearing for all municipal sidewalks.
