A local First Nation’s Chief says it’s incredible that the first ever Mi’kmaq MP has been elected to parliament.
Liberal Jaime Battiste won the Sydney-Victoria riding Monday.
We’koqma’q First Nation Chief Rod Googoo tells The Hawk it shows how much federal politics have been opened up by Mi’kmaq people.
“That’s incredible, it’s historical. We’ve been here for centuries and all of a sudden, in recent years, we’ve taken our rightful place,” he says. “There’s room for everybody, we’ve all got to be a part of something, no matter what ethnic background, what race you come from, what creed, or what religion; we’ve all got to be a part of it, in one way or another, and certainly Jaime, Senator Dan Christmas, Senator Brian Francis have proven that.”
Googoo says Battiste showed the people of Sydney-Victoria how hard he’s going to work in his campaign, and that convinced them to vote for him.
Googoo says he’s glad to have people like Battiste who show young Mi’kmaw that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to.
