Officials with a First Nation community in Antigonish Co. have put forward a funding proposal for their own school.
Paul Prosper, the chief of Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation, says that doesn’t guarantee they’ll build one.
Prosper tells The Hawk nothing is set in stone, even if they get the funding.
“It’s more or less dependent on our financial position.”
Prosper says they submitted the proposal to the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, the Mi’kmaw education authority, in May.
He says they need to have a better idea of what their post-COVID-19 revenues are before they make a final decision.
“We’re going to work our way through this pandemic,” he says. “We need to get clarity on our revenues and things of that nature, because obviously, there’s a bit of uncertainty there.”
Prosper says they’ve done a lot of groundwork, but they won’t know how to move forward until they understand the full impact COVID-19 has had on their community.
