Ecole Pomquet getting multi-million-dollar upgrade

An Antigonish Co. school is getting a multimillion-dollar upgrade.

A joint virtual press conference with Mélanie Joly, Federal Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, Zach Churchill, Provincial Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, and Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, announced the spending will be used to build a new community wing at the École acadienne de Pomquet, as well as expand and upgrade its school wing.

They say the Pomquet Area Cultural Recreation Community Development Association is putting up $800,000, the federal government is adding $3,441,270, and the province will be adding an unspecified amount of funds.

Kelloway says he’s delighted by the announcement.

“Rural Acadian communities like Pomquet are an integral part of the diverse tapestry of Cape Breton and northeastern Nova Scotia,” he says. “They are experiencing strong demographic growth, and need appropriate and welcoming infrastructure in order to preserve the vitality of their language and culture.”

They say renovations will allow for the creation of the Centre culturel et communautaire de Pomquet, a gathering place for francophone and Acadian families, with a 25-child daycare, meeting room, 150-person multipurpose room, full kitchen, storage space, and two offices.
