Local senator urges government to begin Portapique inquiry

A local senator is calling for an inquiry into the Portapique mass killing, now.

Mary Coyle released a statement, with two other senators from the province, Tuesday urging the federal and provincial governments to begin a joint inquiry into the April attack.

Coyle tells The Hawk it’s a call to action for Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and provincial Justice Minister Mark Furey.

“We know there’s going to be an announcement of some sort of inquiry,” she says. “We just wanted to encourage them to announce that soon and get that underway.”

Coyle says everyone’s waiting on it.

She says she remembers when the shooting happened.

“I just felt rocked to my core… we just couldn’t believe that this was happening.”

Coyle says people need to know what happened during the incident, and in the lead-up to it.
