Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders will try to book their ticket to the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League semi-finals.

The Islanders beat the Valley Wildcats in the first two games of their best-of-five, first-round series in Berwick April 10-11; they host the Wildcats in game three.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 8 p.m.

A win sends the Islanders to the second round; a loss forces a game four in the series in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders will try again to finish off the top-ranked Basin Armada in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League playoffs.

The Armada won game three in Port Hawkesbury to stave off elimination in the best-of-five, second-round series Friday night; the Highlanders won the first two games of the series in Bedford April 10-11.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6 p.m.

A win sends the Highlanders to the league final against the Kings, who swept the Voyageurs in three straight in the other semi-final; a loss forces a fifth and deciding game back in Bedford.

 

The St. Croix Angels play the Pleasantdale Panthers in game four of the Antigonish Rural Hockey League final.

The best-of-seven, second-round series is tied 2-2 after the Panthers won game four Friday night.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7 p.m.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads host River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (15-18-9), who have lost three of their last four, are fourth in the six-team Maritimes Division in terms of points percentage, behind Saint John for third, and ahead of fifth-place Moncton; the Islanders are in top spot.

Charlottetown leads the season series 15-3.

Game time in Halifax is 7 p.m.
