Local sports preview (Friday)

The Dalbrae Dragons host the Eskasoni Warriors in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

It’s a match-up of teams at the bottom of the standings in the five-team league- the Dragons (4-8-2), are fourth with 13 points, eight points up on the last-place Warriors (2-9-0).

Dalbrae has won the first two games in the four-game season series.

It’s the second game in as many nights for both teams; Dalbrae lost to SAERC in overtime in Port Hawkesbury Thursday night, while Eskasoni lost to Inverness-Baddeck Academy in Baddeck.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals take on the CEC Cougars in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League playoffs in Truro.

The Royals (3-11-1), who beat Northumberland 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals Thursday night, finished last in the five-team league in the regular season with 10 points; the Cougars (12-2-2), who swept the four-game season series with the Royals, were the league’s top team with 38 points.

Game time is 9:30 p.m.

The winner advances to face the winner of the North Nova-Hants East semi-final for the league title Saturday night; the losers play in the consolation final.

 

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Gatineau Olympiques at Scotiabank Centre at 7 p.m.

The Mooseheads (39-12-3), winners of back-to-back games and six of the last seven, are third in the 18-team league with 81 points, three points behind Drummondville for second, and two points ahead of fourth-place Baie-Comeau; they’re ranked sixth in the country.

The Olympiques (20-29-5) are 13th with 45 points.

It’s the first of two regular season games between the teams.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles play the first of three road games in as many nights when they visit the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada at 8:30 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles (32-16-5), with one win in their last four, are sixth with 69 points, six points behind Rimouski for fifth, and two points ahead of seventh-place Charlottetown; the Armada (19-33-2), who won the only other game between the teams 5-1 in Sydney in October, are 15th with 40 points.

Cape Breton visits Drummondville Saturday night and Sherbrooke Sunday.

 

The Guysborough Academy Blue Eagles are hosting the NSSAF Div. 2 Northumberland Region boys basketball championship.

Six teams in two divisions are competing for the regional banner.

Host Guysborough Academy opens the tournament against Pugwash at 2:30 p.m.; they take on Springhill at 6 p.m.

The Canso Academy Seahawks, the other local team, face Hants North at 7:45 p.m.

The top team from each division will play in the championship game Saturday afternoon.
