Local sports preview (Friday)

The StFX women’s hockey team hosts the Saint Mary’s Huskies in the opening game of their best-of-three AUS semi-final series.

The X-Women (18-7-3) finished the regular season second in the eight-team conference with 39 points, two points ahead of the third-place Huskies (18-9-1).

StFX, who won three of the four games in the season series between the teams, had a bye through the opening round of the playoffs; Saint Mary’s beat Moncton 2-1 in their best-of-three quarterfinal series.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

The winner of the series opener will have a chance to advance to the AUS final when the series shifts to Halifax for game two Sunday night.

Play continues at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

Inverness’ Kenzie MacPhail and Team Nova Scotia are coming off a 3-2 overtime win over BC.

Team Nova Scotia will play in the fifth-place game against Manitoba.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.

The Inverness-Baddeck Academy Rebels host the SAERC Saints in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League playoffs.

The Saints, who won the opening game of the two-game league semi-final series 4-1 in Port Hawkesbury Wednesday night, need a win or a tie to advance to the one-game league final; a Rebels’ regulation win would force a series-deciding overtime period.

Puck drop at the Dr. Bernie MacLean Cultural and Recreation Centre is 7:30 p.m.

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals host the CEC Cougars in the second game of their NSSAF regional playoff series.

The Cougars won the opening game of the best-of-three series 5-0 in Truro Tuesday night.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7 p.m.

A Royals’ win would force a third and deciding game in Truro Saturday night; a loss ends their season.

St. Andrew’s Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles visit Beaver Meadow’s Ryan MacLellan and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Screaming Eagles (33-19-5), who have lost three straight, have 71 points; the Huskies (49-7-1) lead the 18-team league with 99 points.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Cape Breton won the first 3-2 in Sydney in November.

Game time is 8:30 p.m.

Cape Breton visits Val-d’Or to wrap up their six-game trip through Quebec Saturday night.

The StFX track and field teams are competing at the AUS Championship in Moncton.

The event wraps up Saturday.
