Local sports preview (Friday)

The StFX men’s hockey team will try to stave off elimination when they host the Moncton Blue Eagles in game two of their AUS quarterfinal series.

Moncton won the opening game of the best-of-three, first-round series 3-2 at home Wednesday night.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

A win by the X-Men sends the series back to Moncton for a third and deciding game Sunday night; a loss ends their season.

 

The top two teams in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League face off when the Antigonish Bulldogs host the Miners.

The Bulldogs (22-4-1), who have won eight straight and 13 of the last 14, are in top spot in the six-team Sid Rowe Division- and the entire 12-team league- with 45 points, a point up on the second-place Miners (21-6-2).

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams; Antigonish has won two of the first three.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7:30 p.m.

 

The SAERC Saints host the Richmond Academy Hurricanes in their final game of the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League regular season.

The Saints (12-2-0), who have won back-to-back games and 11 of their last 12, are second in the five-team league with 35 points, two points behind Dalbrae for top spot, and 18 points ahead of the third-place Hurricanes (6-6-1), who have lost three of their last four and sit 10 points ahead of fourth-place Eskasoni.

SAERC has won the first three games in the four-game season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 3:30 p.m.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals travel to Trenton to take on the North Nova Gryphons in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League playoffs.

The Royals (4-7-2), who had one win in their last nine games to finish the regular season, ended up fourth in the five-team league with 13 points, a point up on the last-place Gryphons (4-8-0).

Dr. J.H. had a slight 2-1 edge in the three-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 6 p.m.

The winner advances to face first-place Northumberland in the semi-finals Saturday night.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads are on the road in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

They visit Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in a match-up of the league’s two worst teams.

The Mooseheads (18-28-4), losers of six straight and eight of their last nine, are ninth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 40 points, six points behind Quebec for eighth, and 15 points ahead of the last-place Titan (9-36-7); Chisholm has 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 52 games for Acadie-Bathurst in the 2019-20 season.

Halifax has won five of the first six games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Game time is 7 p.m.
