Local sports preview (Friday)

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League are on home ice to open weekend home-and-home series.

The Strait Pirates host the Pictou Co. Scotians at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The Pirates (1-1-0) split their first two games of the 2020-21 season in a home-and-home series with Eskasoni; the Scotians (1-0-0) won their only game against Cumberland Co.

The teams square off again in Trenton Sunday night.

The Antigonish Bulldogs host the Eskasoni Eagles at the Antigonish Arena.

The Bulldogs (1-0-0) beat the Miners in their season opener in Antigonish Oct. 30; the Eagles (1-1-0) split their first two games in that home-and-home series with the Pirates.

It’s the first match-up since their 2019-20 first-round playoff series, which Antigonish won in five games.

The teams play again in Eskasoni Sunday afternoon.

Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams play the first of back-to-back home games.

The Halifax Mooseheads host River Denys’ Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders at Scotiabank Centre.

The Mooseheads (3-5-2), losers of three of the last four, are in a three-way with Cape Breton and Moncton for third in the six-team Maritimes Division with eight points; the Islanders (8-1-0), who have won eight of their first nine games, are tied with Acadie-Bathurst for top spot with 16 points.

Charlottetown won the first two games in the 12-game season series between the teams by a combined score of 12-1 in October.

Halifax hosts Saint John Saturday night.

The Cape Breton Eagles host Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

The Eagles (4-6-0), who have lost two of their last three, are in a three-way with Halifax and Moncton for third in the six-team Maritimes Division with eight points; the Titan (7-1-2) are tied with Charlottetown for top spot with 16 points.

Acadie-Bathurst won the first two games in the 12-game season series between the teams in New Brunswick in October.

The teams square off again in Sydney Saturday night.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
