Local sports preview (Friday)

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League are on home ice.

The Strait Pirates play the Miners at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The Pirates (3-1-0), who have won three of their first four regular season games, are tied with Antigonish for top spot in the six-team Sid Rowe Division with six points, a point up on the third-place Miners (2-0-1), who have yet to lose in regulation.

It’s the first game of the season between the teams.

The Antigonish Bulldogs host the Pictou Co. Scotians at the Antigonish Arena in the first game of the season between those teams.

The Bulldogs (3-0-0), who are perfect to start the 2020-21 season, are tied with the Pirates for top spot in the division; the Scotians (1-2-0) are tied with Eskasoni for fourth with two points.

Antigonish meets the Miners in Membertou Saturday.

Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road for the first of two games in as many nights.

The Cape Breton Eagles travel to PEI to play River Deny’s Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Eagles (6-6-0), who have won back-to-back games and three of their last four, are tied with Halifax for third in the six-team Maritimes Division with 12 points, two points ahead of Moncton and Saint John, the two teams tied for fifth; the Islanders (9-2-0) are in top spot with 18 points.

The teams, who split the first two games in their 12-game season series in Sydney in October, meet again in Charlottetown Saturday night.

The Halifax Mooseheads are in New Brunswick to play Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the Acadia-Bathurst Titan.

The Mooseheads (5-5-2), who have won back-to-back games, are tied with Cape Breton for third in the division with 12 points, four points behind the Titan (7-3-2) for second.

It’s the second game in the 12-team season series between the teams; Acadie-Bathurst won the first 6-3 at home in October.

Halifax squares off with Saint John Saturday night.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
