Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders open the 2018-19 Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League season on the road.

The Islanders are in Berwick to take on the Valley Wildcats.

Puck drop is 7 p.m.

The teams meet again in Berwick Sunday afternoon.

 

The StFX soccer teams are in Halifax for AUS action.

It’s the second game in as many days for the X-Men and X-Women, who hosted Cape Breton in Antigonish Friday night.

The X-Men and X-Women both lost 2-1.

They visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies; both the Saint Mary’s men (0-1-1) and women (0-2-0) are winless to start the 2018 season.

The women start at 1 p.m.; the men get underway at 3:15 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s rugby team visits the UPEI Panthers.

The X-Women (1-0), who are ranked second in the country, won their AUS season opener against Saint Mary’s 76-12 in Antigonish Sept. 7.

The Panthers (0-1) lost their season opener against Acadia 116-12 Sept. 8.

Game time is 2 p.m.

 

The StFX cross country teams are also in Charlottetown for an AUS meet.

They’re taking part in the UPEI Invitational.

The women’s race gets underway at 12 p.m.; the men start at 12:45 p.m.
