Local sports preview (Saturday)

The StFX men’s hockey team takes on the Saint Mary’s Huskies in game two of their best-of-five AUS semi-final series.

The Huskies won the series opener in Halifax Thursday night.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The series shifts to Antigonish for game three Monday night.

 

The Cabot Highlanders have a pair of weekend road games in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

They visit the Valley Wildcats in Berwick.

The Highlanders (2-21-3) are last in the eight-team league with seven points, eight points back of Cape Breton for seventh; the Wildcats (14-12-2), who have won the first four games in the five-game season series, are fifth with 30 points.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The Highlanders visit the league-leading Admirals Sunday morning.

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals will play the deciding game of the NSSAF regional playoffs against the CEC Cougars.
The Royals evened up the best-of-three series 1-1 with a win on Friday.

The teams faceoff in Truro at 7:30

 

The Antigonish Rural League playoffs resume with a pair of games two at the Antigonish Arena.

The Pleasantdale Panthers play the St. Croix Angels at 7 p.m.; the Panthers won the opening game of best-of-seven league semi-final series 4-0 Feb. 16.

The Heatherton Warriors face the County Outlaws at 8:30 p.m.; the Warriors won the series opener 9-0.

Games three in both series are March 2.

 

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

St. Andrew’s Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles wrap up a six-game road trip through Quebec when they visit the Val-d’Or Foreurs at 7 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles, coming off a loss against league-leading Rouyn-Noranda Friday night, won the first game between the teams 6-0 in Sydney in December.

The Halifax Mooseheads play the first of back-to-back home games when they host the Saint John Sea Dogs at Scotiabank Centre at 7 p.m.

The Mooseheads (42-12-3), winners of five straight and nine of the last 10, are third in the 18-team league with 87 points, and are ranked sixth in the country; the Sea Dogs (12-41-4) are 17th with 28 points.

Halifax has won the first five games in the eight-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

The Mooseheads host the Armada Sunday afternoon.

 

The StFX basketball teams are home to wrap up the 2018-19 AUS regular season.

They host the UPEI Panthers in a pair of four point games at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.

The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
