Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders open the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoffs on home ice.

They host the Valley Wildcats.

The Islanders (15-19-2) finished fifth in the eight-team league with 32 points, 13 points behind the fourth-place Wildcats (22-13-1).

The teams met five times in the regular season- the Wildcats had a slight 3-2 edge in the season series.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The series remains in Port Hood for game two Sunday afternoon; it shifts to Berwick for game three Friday night.

 

The Cabot Highlanders host the Kings in a pair of games in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (2-23-3) are last in the eight-team league with seven points, eight points back of Cape Breton for seventh; the Kings (17-10-1) are fourth with 35 points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6:30 p.m.

The teams have split their first two regular season games; they meet again in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas open their Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League series on home ice when they host the Cole Harbour Storm.

The Novas (16-16-1) finished the regular season seventh in the 12-team league with 33 points, four points back of the sixth-place Storm (16-12-5), who won two of the three games in the season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The winner will have a chance to win the best-of-three first-round series- and advance to provincials- when the series shifts to Cole Harbour for game two March 9.

 

Antigonish’s Landyn Pitts, Kara and Ella MacLean and Team Nova Scotia are back on the ice at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

Nova Scotia, who lost 3-1 to Saskatchewan Friday will play for seventh against New Brunswick Saturday

 

The NSSAF Div. 2 high school hockey regional playoffs continue at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood.

All five teams from the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League are taking part- the host Dalbrae Dragons, the SAERC Saints, the Richmond Academy Hurricanes, the Inverness-Baddeck Academy Rebels and the Eskasoni Warriors.

It’s the last day of round robin action.

Inverness-Baddeck(2-0-0) and SAERC(2-0-0) square off at 9 a.m., Richmond Academy(1-2-0) plays SAERC at 12:30 p.m., and Inverness-Baddeck Academy takes on host Dalbrae(2-0-1) at 3:30 p.m.

The top four teams advance to the semi-finals Sunday afternoon, with the championship game Sunday night.

 

The Antigonish Rural League playoffs resume with a pair of games three at the Antigonish Arena.

The County Outlaws take on the Heatherton Warriors at 7 p.m.; the Warriors lead the best-of-seven first-round series 2-0.

The St. Croix Angels play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.; the Panthers have a 2-0 lead in that semi-final series.

Games four in both series are March 9.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads play the first of back-to-back road games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

They visit Beaver Meadow’s Ryan MacLellan and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

The Mooseheads (45-12-3), winners of eight straight and 12 of the last 13, are third in the 18-team league, and ranked fifth in the country; the Huskies are in top spot in the league, and are ranked first in the country.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; Rouyn-Noranda won the first 5-4 in Halifax in January.

Game time is 8 p.m.

Halifax visits Val-d’Or Sunday night.

 

At the NSSAF Division 2 Basketball Provincials at Millwood high

Dr JH Gillis will play for the Provincial Banner against Breton Education Centre.

Tip off is 4pm
