Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Novas play the first of back-to-back weekend road games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They’re in East Hants to take on the Rangers in a match-up of two of the top teams in the 12-team league.

The Novas (6-2-0), who have won back-to-back games and five of their last six, are in a three-way tie with the Rangers (6-2-0) and the Gulls for top spot with 12 points, a point up on fourth-place Truro.

It’s the first game in the three-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The Novas visit Bedford Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of local high school hockey games.

The SAERC Saints and Dalbrae Dragons play the second half of their home-and-home series in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

SAERC won the first game in Port Hood Friday night in a shootout.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 7 p.m.

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals travel to Westville to take on the Northumberland Nighthawks in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Royals (1-0-0) won their 2019-20 season opener against North Nova in Antigonish Wednesday night.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

The Cape Breton Eagles host the Sherbrooke Phoenix in a match-up of conference leaders at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The Eagles (11-3-0), winners of five straight, lead the 10-team Eastern Conference with 22 points, a point up on second-place Charlottetown, while the Phoenix (12-1-2) are the top team in the Western Conference- and the entire league- with 26 points.

It’s the first of two regular season games between the teams; they square off again in Sherbrooke in November.

The Halifax Mooseheads, playing for the second time in as many nights after a home loss against Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and Moncton Friday, visit the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The teams have split the first two games in their eight-game season series.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws square off with the St. Croix Angels at 8:45 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The StFX women’s hockey team plays the second of back-to-back AUS road games.

The X-Women, coming off a loss against Mount Allison in Sackville Friday night, are in Halifax to meet the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a match-up of two nationally-ranked teams; StFX is ninth in the latest U Sports top 10, while Saint Mary’s is seventh.

It’s the first game in the four-game season series.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s rugby team hosts the Acadia Axewomen in the 2019 AUS championship game.

The first-place X-Women (6-0) finished the regular season with a perfect record, including wins in both games against Acadia, and earned a bye to the conference final; the Axewomen (4-2), who were second in the regular season, beat UPEI in the AUS semi-final to advance.

StFX is ranked third in the country; Acadia is seventh.

The X-Women have won every AUS rugby title since the sport become part of conference play in 1998 with one exception- the Axewomen beat them in 2015.

Kick off at StFX Stadium in Antigonish is 2 p.m.

The 2019 U Sports women’s rugby championship is in Ottawa Oct. 30 to Nov. 3.

 

The StFX X-Men finish off their 2019 AUS football season on the road.

They’re in Halifax to take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The X-Men (1-6), with one win in seven games heading into their season finale, are guaranteed to finish last in the five-team conference and miss the playoffs; they’re two games back of the Huskies (3-4) and Mount Allison, who are tied for the conference’s third and final playoff spot.

Saint Mary’s won the first game of the season between the teams 21-13 in Antigonish in September.

Game time is 2 p.m.

 

The StFX cross country teams are competing for AUS titles in Fredericton.

The women’s 6km race starts at 12 p.m.; the men’s 8km race gets underway at 12:45 p.m.
