Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders kick off a pair of weekend road games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League when they visit Dartmouth.

The Islanders (4-14-0), who have lost three straight and five of their last six, are last in the eight-team league with eight points, a point back of Sydney for seventh; Dartmouth (11-10-1) is fifth with 23 points.

Dartmouth has won two of the first three games in the five-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

Cape Breton West visits Cole Harbour Sunday morning.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League are in action.

The Panthers visit Halifax at 3:30 p.m.

The Panthers (5-7-4), winless in three straight and five of their last six, are third in the seven-team league with 14 points, 12 points behind undefeated Halifax (13-0-0) for second, and three points ahead of the Penguins and EDZA West, the two teams tied for fourth.

It’s the first game in four-game season series between the teams, who meet again in Halifax Sunday morning.

The Northern Selects host the Penguins in the first half of a weekend home-and-home series in Pictou at 6 p.m.

The Selects (14-0-0), who are perfect to start the 2019-20 season, are in top spot with 28 points, two points up on second-place Halifax; the Penguins (4-7-3) are tied with EDZA West for fourth with 11 points.

It’s also the first game in the four-game season series between those teams, who square off for a second time in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders play the first of back-to-back home games against the Valley Wildcats in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (8-7-3), winners of four straight, have 19 points, three points behind the second-place Wildcats (11-2-0), who have won the first two games in the four-game season series.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6 p.m.

The teams play again in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas travel to North Sydney to take on the Cougars in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

The teams are at opposite ends of the standings in the 12-team league- the Novas (13-5-0), winners of four straight and seven of their last eight, are in top spot with 26 points, two point up on Truro, Bedford and the Gulls, the three teams tied for second, while the Cougars (2-12-0) are last with four points.

The Novas won the first game in the three-game season series 4-0 in Antigonish in October.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors host the Pleasantdale Panthers at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws square off with the St. Croix Angels at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams finish off a home-and-home series.

The Cape Breton Eagles host the Halifax Mooseheads.

The Mooseheads won the latest edition of the Battle of Nova Scotia in Halifax Friday night.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.
